FEMA: Mobile Homes Head for Southeast Texas Thursday

FEMA announced Wednesday that additional mobile homes arriving for Southeast Texans displaced from their homes by Hurricane Ike.  The new units are scheduled to begin shipping Thursday.  The  increase will triple the existing number of trailers from 18 to 62.  However, thousands of people are still without homes.

I need shelter, what can I do?

For evacuees who have returned to southeast Texas and find their home unlivable, the American Red Cross is still operating shelters at the following locations:.

5200 Ave N, Galveston

People coming to Red Cross shelters should bring: pillows and bedding; diapers and formula for your children; prescription medicines; toiletries; and food to meet any special dietary needs you may have. In addition, on October 11th FEMA announced that it is extending the hotel program until Tuesday, Oct. 28. FEMA may authorize extended stays beyond Oct. 28 as needed and will notify those applicants individually.  Those whose homes have been deemed uninhabitable by FEMA inspectors or whose inspections have not been done can stay in hotels or motels paid for by the federal government until the October 28.

FEMA will pay for the lodging directly to qualified hotels and motels.  If you are staying in a hotel that is not participating, save your receipts. FEMA may reimburse you if they determine your home is unsafe to live in. Be sure to register with FEMA!

Finally, FEMA's Disaster Housing Assistance Program is scheduled to begin November 1st.  FEMA will refer eligible hurricane victims needing assistance with housing to HUD.  HUD will work with local public housing authorities.  These public housing authorities can help you find housing.  For more information of the FEMA/HUD disaster housing assistance plan, please click here.
