Time Running Out to Apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance
If you can't work because of Hurricane Ike, you may be eleigible to file for disaster unemployment assistance. But, if you need Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA), you must file by today, Wednesday October 15, 2008. Applications filed after today will be considered untimely, unless the individual provides good cause for filing after the deadline.
To be eligible for disaster unemployment insurance:
- You were working or scheduled to begin work before the hurricane (includes self-employment)
- You can't work because of hurricane damage to the place of employment.
- The job (including self-employment) was you primary source of income
- You do not qualify for regular unemployment benefits
- You were injured in the hurricane and cannot work, or
- The person that supported you died and you now need to provide support.
You must file for regular unemployment benefits before filing for DUA.File for regular benefits online. If you cannot file online, call one of the Tele-Center phone numbers listed below, Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

You will need your Social Security number, a copy of your most recent federal income tax forms or check stubs, or documentation to support you were working or self-employed when the disaster occurred. To receive DUA benefits, all required documentation must be submitted within 21 days from the day the DUA application is filed.
Benefits begin with the date the individual was unemployed due to the disaster incident and can extend up to 26 weeks after the Presidential declaration date. Reemployment services are available through Texas Workforce Centers or by accessing www.WorkInTexas.com for information.
