I Need Help With Health Care
Staying healthy during a major disaster is very important. You must find ways to take care of yourself wherever you are. You may need to see a doctor after the hurricane, but services are limited or your regular health care provider isn’t available. Here are some options:
- If it’s a medical emergency, don’t hesitate to call 911. You can also go to a local hospital emergency room.
- If you’re not feeling well emotionally, seek free assessment services at a local Red Cross shelter. Call 1 (800) RED-CROSS [1 (800) 733-2767] (toll-free) or 1 (800) 257-7575 (Español, toll-free) for more information.
- If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO), you have special rights during times of emergency, including the ability to see an out-of-network doctor or provider at your usual in-network rate. Call 1 (800) MEDICARE [1 (800) 633-4227] (toll-free) for more information.
- Visit the Texas Medical Center (TMC). TMC rode out the storm and is providing medical care to residents.
The American Red Cross Community Services Transportation Program - The Greater Houston Area Red Cross is also providing non-emergency van transportation for people who need medical attention but do not have other means of transportation. The Red Cross primarily provides door-to-door service to and from the Texas Medical Center, but you may be able to get a ride to another destination depending on the availability of drivers and vehicles. To learn more and to find out if you qualify, call (713) 313-1631.
